I lost my mother, Sherrie Gibson, to Ovarian Cancer on September
16, 2000 and my best friend, Tracy, lost her mother, Jeanne Spencer, to Lung
Cancer on June 27, 2008. It was that year I started walking to honor our
mother's lives but I continue to walk year after year in memory of those who
gave it all but lost, in honor of those who have won the battle and for all
those still fighting the ugly disease we call cancer. This will be my 7th
year and 10th time to walk 3-Days and 60 miles in the fight against
breast cancer.
Cancer wants us to give up hope, to quit and throw in the towel. I
will admit at times it sounds tempting. My eyes are running out of tears, my
heart is sad from all the loss and my feet are tired from many miles of
walking. My spirit, however, remains unshaken and stronger than ever. I REFUSE to let cancer win!
According to the American Cancer Society, “more than one million
people in the United States get cancer each year.” In my books that’s One Million too many! I, along with all of us, can and are making a
difference in the fight against cancer. I believe that we must fund research so
that we can continue to make improvements in cancer treatments, increase life expediencies of survivors and one day find that CURE to end all cancers! To
make this happen we must raise money for research. Without research there is no
cure. My goal is to raise $2,300 by October 3rd. What better way to
celebrate my birthday than by reaching my goal and knowing that we are one step

In closing let me share a verse that I try to live by: Let us not
become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest
if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9.
